Islands of Nature
Nature in Athens and the Greek city in general is present in the form of a residue of the built, a left-over, as “islands of nature” in the “urban sea” of buildings. This way, the Metropolitan Park, at the site of the old international airport, can be viewed as a metaphor of the Greek city: a group of “islands of nature” each one constituting a small natural environment of specific materials, flora and activities. The two asphalt runways are re-used as circulation axes and offer access to the different islands-destinations, following the operation logic of an airport terminal
